New Tool Tracks Disease Proteins Inside Living Neurons

New Tool Tracks Disease Proteins Inside Living Neurons

A technology developed at the University of Queensland that lets scientists watch how disease-related proteins behave inside living neurons will now be used to push early drug discovery forward for neurodegenerative conditions.

The approach gives researchers a way to study proteins in their natural cellular environment rather than in artificial lab setups. That distinction matters for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's research, where the clumping and misfolding of specific proteins is tied to the progress of the disease. Being able to see these processes as they happen inside working neurons could help scientists spot which compounds actually change the course of the disease, not just its symptoms.

The team behind the work says the method is suited to the early stages of drug development, when large numbers of candidate molecules need to be screened quickly and reliably. By observing protein behavior in live cells, researchers can get a clearer picture of whether a potential treatment is having the intended effect before committing to more expensive testing.

Neurodegenerative diseases remain among the hardest conditions to treat, with few options that slow their progression. Tools that reveal what is going wrong inside neurons, and how experimental drugs alter that, could shorten the path from promising idea to viable therapy. The next phase of the work will focus on applying the technology to active drug discovery programs targeting Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.
