Living at the Lake House Taught Me About Risk Taking and Other Life Lessons

Living at the Lake House Taught Me About Risk Taking and Other Life Lessons

For years, I thought being a good father meant keeping my kids safe. I hovered. I warned. I said "be careful" so often the words lost meaning. Then we spent a summer at a lake house that changed everything.

The place was old and a little rundown. The dock had loose boards. The rowboat took on water if you didn't bail it fast enough. My first instinct was to fix everything and ban my children from touching anything that could hurt them. But the lake had other plans.

The first lesson came when my youngest wanted to jump off the dock alone. I stood there, heart pounding, ready to catch him. He looked back at me, not scared, just waiting. I let him jump. He surfaced laughing, and I realized I had been holding my breath for years.

Risk taking at the lake was constant. Building a fire. Swimming past the buoy. Taking the boat out when clouds gathered on the horizon. Each time, I had to decide: step in or step back. The lake taught me that fatherhood is not about removing danger. It is about teaching someone to read the water.

My kids learned to gauge wind speed, to tie knots that hold, to respect the weather. They learned that getting scraped up is part of learning. And I learned that my job is not to be a shield. It is to be a voice that says "you can do this" instead of "be careful."

Now we are back in the city. But the lake stays with us. When my son climbs a tree at the park, I do not yell up at him. I just watch. And when he looks down, I nod. That is what the lake house taught me about being a dad. Trust them. Let them jump. And be there when they surface.
