A new tax credit program is giving state residents a way to support education while reducing what they owe in taxes. Under the FSTC, residents can direct a credit of up to $1,700 off their 2027 taxes by making a donation to a recognized Scholarship Granting Organization, or SGO. That donation is then used by the SGO to provide financial assistance for the educational needs of public and private school students from kindergarten onward.
The money can cover a range of costs that often strain family budgets. These include tuition, before and after school activities, tutoring, special needs services, and supplies or technology. For many households, these expenses add up quickly, and the credit offers a way to offset them while helping other students at the same time.
Supporters say the program creates a direct link between local giving and classroom needs. Instead of sending money to a distant fund, donors choose an approved organization that channels the aid to students in their own communities. The credit is applied to 2027 taxes, giving residents time to plan their contributions.
Families interested in receiving assistance or residents who want to donate should confirm which organizations hold recognized status before participating. The program is expected to draw attention as the tax year approaches.
